Fellow foodies know that the first step in planning any great trip is researching a list of the must-try foods in the area; The second step – Locating where to find them.

10 Must-Try Foods In Albania

1. Byrek: A flaky, typically savory pastry you will find in every cafe and bakery in Albania

Byrek is made by layering several sheets of phyllo pastry dough, filling the center with cheese, yogurt, vegetables, fruit, meat, pumpkin.. The combination possibilities are endless! This is the perfect grab and go snack for a busy day exploring Albania.

2. Kadayif: A sweet and crunchy pastry made from shredded phyllo dough, nuts, and syrup

Kadayif is made by spreading layers of shredded phyllo dough strands over a baking sheet, topping with butter, cinnamon, and nuts, baking until golden, then soaking in sweet syrup. This pastry consists of the perfect blend of textures and tasted especially delicious with ice cream over top!

3. Tave Kosi: A casserole made of lamb, rice, yogurt, and eggs

Tave Kosi is a comfort food you can find at any traditional albanian food restaurant during your trip. It is made by browning Lamb pieces in butter over the stovetop, then cooking with rice, and baking in the oven with yogurt and an egg mixture. Tave Kosi is made with an unexpected combination of ingredients that is surprisingly delicious!

4. Qofte: Albanian Meatballs

One of my favorite foods throughout my culinary journey through Albania, Qofte is made by combining minced beef, chicken, or lamb with garlic, onion, and herbs, then pan frying to perfection! Qofte can be served as a snack, main course, or appetizer. If you see this on the menu – Order a round for the table and cross your fingers for extra charred bits! I’m drooling just thinking about these.

5. Fergese Tirane: Baked cheese with roasted red peppers and tomato

Fergese Tirane is made by stewing various vegetables together before combining with a yogurt roux and baking in a casserole dish – This can be served as an appetizer, snack, or even with bread and protein as a meal!

6. Petulla:Fried Dough

Petulla is an incredibly simple treat and is made by frying a yeast or yogurt based dough – This fried delight is typically enjoyed for breakfast and can be savory or sweet with toppings like honey, sugar, or cheese!

7. Souvlaki:Pork, Chicken, Beef, or Lamb marinated then grilled on a skewer

While in Albania, you’re bound to end up on a time crunch in need of a quick and affordable meal – This is it, my friend. What’s even better, it just might be one of the most delicious meals you eat in Albania. Served on a skewer or stuffed in a Pita with fries, Souvlaki is the perfect snack to keep you trucking throughout the day!

8. Japrak: Stuffed Grape Leaves

A little sour and a little savory – This dish is a refreshing start to a traditional Albanian summer meal. Japrak is made by boiling grape leaves or greens in water or a tomato-based sauce, then filling with minced lamb or beef, rice, onion, and herbs. This process is followed by boiling the stuffed pieces and serving warm!

9. Grilled Vegetables: The Albanian Way

You wouldn’t expect something as simple as grilled vegetables to be on the top of a foodie bucket list – But in Albania, a plate of grilled veggies with your meal is more than worth the extra few LEK. These vegetables are almost always served Julienne, roasted to perfection, and topped with a sweet balsamic glaze. After having my first plate of vegetables purely for nutritional purposes, I discovered this would soon to be one of my favorite bites in every meal moving forward.

10. Fish / Seafood

As a country with almost 300 miles of coast lining the Adriatic and Ionian Sea, you shouldn’t be surprised to find that Albanian seafood is top notch and is a staple of the country’s cuisine. Whether you’re ordering a whole fish alongside fresh vegetables and herbs or a fried combination platter, the seafood you will eat in Albania is as fresh as it gets!

Prior to exploring Albania, I spent hours reading every blog post and thread I could find on what food I should taste on my trip; I specifically searched for articles written by Native Albanians – Here is one blog post I found especially helpful. The majority of these 10 dishes were repeated again and again, while a few were added as a result of my own experiences in this wonderful and delicious Balkan country.
