But I’m actually attempting to re-establish myself in a city I’ve lived for 12 years. After growing a reputation as an outdoor fitness instructor and local personal trainer, I’ve thrown in the towel in a quest to discover my most authentic self – As it turns out, that person is not living at the gym and counting macros (which is unfortunate after over 6 years of pursuing a career path, but fear of time-wasted is never a solid reason to continue something that isn’t quite right).
I heard something a few years ago that’s really stuck with me, and that is the idea that in order to find happiness as an adult, we should look to what brought us happiness at 10 years old, before ego took control.
What brought me joy at 10? Writing, creating, and performing.
Which brings me to today, January 30, 2025. At 30 years old I am creating a life filled with activities that brought me joy as a child – I’ve started a blog, which I’ve published in every week since October, and which has allowed me to use my creativity in a variety of ways from graphics to post ideas. And I’ve continued hosting outdoor workout classes in Austin with a local business called Rah! Power fitness, which has given me the privilege to “perform” to some degree, and be a part of an amazing local community.
So that’s me.
So why the heck do I have the right to make this newsletter? Well, I’ve known Austin for a long time and I want to nurture that relationship again by exploring new places, staying in-tune with local events, and contributing to my community.
Plus – I want to. And that is reason enough to do anything. 🙂 JANUARY IN AUSTIN

1. The Morning Spin
If you’re on ATXTok, you’ve probably already seen these viral videos taking over your FYP. This bi-weekly event is hosted by Mushroom Cowboy and whichever local coffee shop + DJ combination is lucky enough to be a part of the chaos. Think wholesome dayclub minus the alcohol – As you’d expect, Austinites are eating this up.
February Events:
– Feb 08, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM CST – 2nd & Roast at W Austin Hotel on Lavaca
*hot coffee + house music + exclusive Mushroom Cowboy merch
– Feb 22, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM CST – Codependent Cocktails + Coffee on West Ave.
*hot coffee + house music + exclusive Mushroom Cowboy merch
2. Tancho Sushi
While Tancho has been around since Fall 2024, the girlies have been obsessing over the takeout sushi boxes over past few weeks (maybe because the holidays are over and we finally have time to switch our turkey for takeout?) The idea behind this brand is “Sushi For Everyone,” offering an Omakase experience for as low as $35… Insane, I know.
3. Custard Boy
As if Paperboy and Custard Prison weren’t popular enough, they’ve combined forces with this pop-up hosted on the last Saturday of every month – So while we are desperately waiting for Sarah to open a brick & mortar here in Austin, at least we can get a monthly taste of her ooey gooey Pączki donuts alongside a killer brunch.
February Pop-Up:
– Saturday, February 22nd.
Note: You can check out Sarah’s Instagram for additional pop-ups; There’s actually one this weekend. Here’s the details:
Sage Studio x Custard Prison Pop-Up:
– Saturday, February 1st at 12PM Until Sold Out. Pre-Order Details on IG.
This is a list of what’s literally IN Austin as of January 2025 (new restaurants, etc) & What’s OUT aka closed and out of business.
Micklethewait Craft Meats
Small’s Pizza at Springdale General
ARIS – Clarksville Steakhouse
Papercut – Art Studio + Cocktail Bar
Happy Lamb Hot Pot – All You Can Eat Chinese Chain
DAMN-A Korean BBQ Buffet
OUT:
Trudy’s final location has closed
They are looking to sell the brand to a new hospitality group or open a smaller location
Cuantas Hamburguesas has closed
”Goodbye for now” was posted to their instagram, so we’ll see what comes of that…
Con Todo Food Truck has closed
While Chef Gomez is leaving the truck, he will be continuing his work in the community
Black Star Co-Op Brewpub has closed
World’s first member owned brewpub; I hope it comes back 🙁
Little Ola’s Biscuits Wells Branch has closed
But a Mueller location is expected soon
Olive and June has closed to the public
But is still offering private events and catering
To be honest, the most striking feature on this list is pretty clear cut for a millennial who spent her time at UT slurping down Mexican Martinis and complaining about the shitty food at Trudy’s. What will you miss most?
