5 Greatest Destinations In Europe For Foodies

If there’s one thing that makes or breaks a trip for us foodies, it is the culinary experience. Whether a destination is known for a certain cuisine, known to have the most Michelin Star restaurants, or isn’t known much for their food at all – It doesn’t matter as long as you end up having some of the best or most unique bites of your life, right?

Below are 5 Destinations in Europe that will lead you towards just that!

1. Bologna, Italy

“The Culinary Capital of Italy” is a must for any foodie touring Europe! Known for its superb pastas like Tortellini and Green Lasagna, its fresh Parmigiano Reggiano, and cured meats like Prosciutto and Pancetta, Bologna is just the place for a carb, meat, and cheese-loving girl like me.

Personally, I have never been here but when I go I will be sure to bring nothing but loose clothing.

2. Paris, France

As someone who’s been to Paris over ten times just to stuff my face, I feel it’s important to keep this culinary destination at the top of this list! One of my favorite things about the culinary scene in Paris is the variety of cuisines in which you can find top-notch (and sometimes very affordable) meals all over the city – Probably a result of Paris being the capital of the most-visited country in the world.

Paris is known for many things, but at the top of every list – Escargot, Macaron, Baguette, Steak Frites, and of course… French Onion Soup (which I must say I would die for right now as we’re in the first Texas cold front of Winter 2024.)

3. San Sebastian, Spain

San Sebastian is known for two of the things I love most in this world – Its breathtaking beaches and mouth-watering pintxos. Utilizing seasonal ingredients from the Cantabrian Sea and local farms, the Basque Country cuisine is chock full of unique flavor combinations, serving up fresh dishes like Txuleta, Gilda, Kokotxas, Bacalao Al Pil Pil, Idiazabal Cheese, and the Spanish Tortilla.

4. Naples, Italy

When I think of Naples, I think of one thing – Pizza! And for good reason; This city is where the pizza was born in the 1800s, after all. You can expect the Neapolitan Pizza to be one of two things – Baked at a high temperature in a wood-fired oven, comprising of thin crust and tall edges OR fried and stuffed to perfection, as this city is also known for its famous Fried Pizza specialty.

All that being said, pizza is not the only food Naples has going for it. Get your foodie bucket list ready for a culinary adventure consisting of Spaghetti Alla Puttanesca, Neapolitan Ice Cream, Ragu, Pastiera, Cuoppo, and more… Anyone else drooling over their keyboard?

5. Lisbon, Portugal

Another city recognized for its stellar international cuisine, Lisbon has become a top foodie destination in Europe over the past few years and was even named “Europe’s Best City Culinary Destination” at the World Culinary Awards in 2024!

Known for its fresh seafood, meat stews, and of course, the famous Pastel De Nata – Lisbon will keep you looking forward to your next bite for as long as you’re willing to stay in the city!

While not mentioned on this list, a new favorite foodie destination of mine is Tirana, Albania. The Albanian culture is so humble about everything they do, you will be shocked everytime you sit down for a meal at a place unknown to even Google Maps. If you’re planning a trip anytime soon (which you should), check out my list of 10 Must-Try Foods In Albania before you go!

Which of these European Foodie Destinations will be added to your bucket list first?! Personally, I am eager to check the rest of these off of my list – Starting with Naples… I need that fried pizza in my tummy as soon as possible.

Let me know which you’re most excited for in the comments. 🙂
